Retirement Age Increase in 2024: Fact Check-Central government did not increase the retirement age of employees, PIB called the claim fake

Fact Check: Central Government Has Not Increased the Retirement Age of Employees, PIB Declares the Claim Fake

On November 19, 2024, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India clarified on its official Fact-Check X (formerly Twitter) handle that a viral claim about the central government increasing the retirement age of its employees is false. The claim, which has been circulating on social media, falsely suggests that the government has raised the retirement age for central government employees to 62 years. PIB confirmed that no such decision has been made.

In August 2023, the government had already confirmed in the Lok Sabha that there were no plans to change the retirement age for central government employees. Furthermore, no credible sources or media reports support the claim that the government has decided to increase the retirement age. Additionally, PIB’s official press releases contain no mention of such a change.

Retirement Age for Some Employees Exceeds 60 Years

While the retirement age for most central government employees is 60 years, some employees have a retirement age higher than 60. For instance, the Fifth Central Pay Commission recommended increasing the retirement age of central employees from 58 to 60 years.

In September 2017, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an extension of the retirement age for doctors in various departments, ministries, and autonomous organizations (except for Central Health Service (CHS) doctors) to 65 years.

Despite viral claims, the PIB reiterated on November 19, 2024, that no decision has been made by the government to raise the retirement age of central government employees to 62 years.
